The series’ first arc followed Denji’s journey as a Devil Hunter under Public Safety. In this saga, his power as Chainsaw Man is exploited by Makima – Public Safety’s de facto leader – who worked behind the scenes as the Control Devil.

Eventually, Denji’s ingenious idea to slay the unkillable Makima worked. But she didn’t stay dead for long.

At the end of the Public Safety Saga, the Control Devil reincarnates into the child Nayuta. Fearing that she’d become another Makima, Kishibe (Denji and Power’s mentor) entrusts her to Denji who raises Nayuta as his younger sister.

A year passes, and worldwide Chainsaw Man supporters form a cult made mostly of high school students. Dubbed “The Chainsaw Man Church,” the popular cult preaches a false narrative about Denji’s true goals.

It’s later revealed that the church secretly signs its followers into a deal with the Fire Devil, who turns its mindless pawns into what they love the most. This leads to hundreds of thousands of citizens turning into violent Chainsaw Man clones who wreak havoc across the country.

Nayuta gets separated from Denji in the chaos and is presumed dead. Afterward, characters who want revenge on Chainsaw Man raid Public Safety’s fortress to rescue Denji, who promises them a fight once Nayuta is found.

The end of Chapter 169 brings back an antagonist who claims to know the location of Denji’s adopted sister.
