How to start Shadow of the Erdtree DLC
In Elden Ring, you can start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC by interacting with the mummified Miquella’s hand popping out of the cacoon at Cacoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace inside Mohg boss arena at Mohgwyn’s Palace located in the Siofra River.
To put it in simpler terms, players who have already defeated Mohg, the Lord of Blood and unlocked the Cacoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace can open the map and press the R3 button or its equivalent on Xbox and PC to use the “Show Underground” option.
Doing so will let you view the Siofra River location and unlocked Sites of Grace. Hover over the Cacoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace and teleport there. At the end of the boss arena, you will find Miquella’s cacoon, with whom you can interact to get teleported to the DLC location for Shadow of the Erdtree.
How to get to Mohgwyn’s Palace in Elden Ring if you are a new player?
For new players, the shortest and easiest way to Mohgwyn’s Palace location to access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is to complete White Mask Varre’s questline until you are given the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which you can consume to be teleported to the said location.
Varre is the first NPC you find in Limgrave. Talk to him and exhaust his dialogue options. After that, defeat Godrick the Grafted, head to the Roundtable Hold, talk to Two Fingers and go to the Liurnia of the Lakes region.
You can find him at Rose Church. Talk to him, use the Festering Bloody Finger to invade players thrice, and then talk to Varre at Rose Church and obtain the Lord of Blood’s Favor.
It’s time to soak it with Maiden’s Blood, which you can find in the Chapel you spawn at the beginning of the game. Otherwise, you can also head to the Church of Inhibition at the top of the Frenzied Flame Village to soak the Lord of Blood’s Favor item.
If you are ok with killing NPCs, you can also kill Irina at the entrance of the Weeping Peninsula location and Hyetta near the Lake-Facing Cliffs location and soak the blood to progress Varre’s quest.
Heading to the Chapel of Anticipation via The Four Belfries teleport gate is the best way to progress the quest without killing any NPCs. However, to save time and get your Imbuded Key, you can also head to the Church of Inhibition.
Once you bring the blood-soaked Favor, Varre will give you a reusable Bloody Finger. Talk to him again, and he will finally hand you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal that you can use to reach Mohgwyn’s Palace.
Killed Varre? Here’s how to reach Mohgwyn’s Palace in Elden Ring
Killing NPCs, especially one like Varre, who calls us Maidenless in our first interaction, is nothing new. I know many of you have already done it intentionally or by mistake.
Thankfully, there’s still a way to reach Mohgwyn’s Palace. However, it requires you to progress into the game until you unlock the second half of the Mountaintops of the Giants by defeating Commander Niall at Castle Sol, the last central region in the base game.
Assuming you have the said area unlocked, head to the above-highlighted location and defeat the Sanguine Nobel NPC, who invades you as soon as you reach the location to access the portal gate that takes you to a cave leading to the Palace Approach Ledge Road.
You can follow the main path to the Dynasty Mausoleum Entrance and then the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint. After that, the following location is the Cacoon of the Empyrean, where you will fight Mohg, the Lord of Blood. Only after defeating him will you be able to start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
